AI Chatbots May Soon Assist Doctors in Urgent Care Clinics
The Daily Caller

Researchers completed a study where an AI chatbot assisted primary care physicians in real-time at a clinic, with the chatbot's summaries helping clinicians prepare for visits in 75% of cases.

What happened

A recent study has explored the potential of artificial intelligence chatbots in assisting primary care physicians in real-time at clinics. The study, conducted at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston, used a chatbot called Articulate Medical Intelligence Explorer (AMIE) to interact with patients. AMIE was developed by Google researchers using large language models optimized for diagnostic reasoning and conversations.

Over an eight-month period, roughly 100 patients consulted with AMIE before visiting urgent care. The chatbot's summaries helped clinicians prepare for visits in 75% of cases and influenced their approach to care in over half of the cases. Additionally, AMIE's differential diagnoses matched the final diagnoses 90% of the time. However, the study also found that the chatbot provided incorrect information on one occasion during hundreds of conversations.

The study's findings suggest that AI chatbots like AMIE could potentially improve the efficiency and accuracy of primary care. The use of AI in healthcare is becoming increasingly common, with other companies and organizations adopting AI technologies to detect security vulnerabilities, assist with medical procedures, and even issue prescriptions.
