AI Hospital Billing Error Leads to $27,000 Surprise Bill

AI Hospital Billing Error Leads to $27,000 Surprise Bill
Washington Examiner

A hospital's AI system incorrectly billed a patient $27,000 after they had already paid for their medical care, highlighting concerns about the use of artificial intelligence in medical billing.

What happened

A patient received a hospital bill for $27,000 after already paying for their medical care. The hospital attributed the error to an AI-enabled process within its Epic system, which identified the patient's insurance and billed it despite the patient having arranged and paid for the services as a self-pay patient.

The hospital has since corrected the disputed charges and credited the patient's account. However, this incident raises concerns about the use of artificial intelligence in medical billing and the potential for errors and unfair charges.

A study by the Blue Cross Blue Shield Association found that AI tools in medical billing were associated with nearly $1 billion in additional spending over two years, with concerns about increases in documented conditions without corresponding increases in treatment.

The patient, who is also the CEO of a public relations business, is calling for an investigation into AI-driven medical billing and a suspension of automated billing practices pending an independent review of their accuracy and patient protections.

The patient is also advocating for greater transparency and accountability in medical billing, including the requirement for a named human reviewer for disputed bills and a clear explanation of every balance.
