AI Panic: Trump Adviser Calls Warnings a Political Ploy

AI Panic: Trump Adviser Calls Warnings a Political Ploy
Washington Examiner

David Sacks, a Trump adviser, calls AI panic a political ploy, suggesting warnings from Anthropic and OpenAI are orchestrated to raise panic and manipulate politicians ahead of the midterm elections.

What happened

David Sacks, a top adviser to President Donald Trump on artificial intelligence, has suggested that the recent warnings about AI from industry leaders are a political ploy. Sacks described the idea that AI could end civilization as a "hoax" and argued that existing product liability regulations are already in place to oversee the industry.

Sacks pointed to the resignation of Anthropic researcher Jacob Coxon, which sparked a new emphasis on AI reform, as potentially "orchestrated" to raise panic and manipulate politicians ahead of the midterm elections. He also cited former President Barack Obama's comments on AI, suggesting that the existential debate is driven more by political ploys than a real crisis.

Sacks expressed concerns that companies like Anthropic and OpenAI are deflecting their core responsibility to handle the technology and are seeking antitrust exemptions that could create a technology cartel in the US. He argued that these companies should internalize a sense of responsibility instead of seeking waivers and exemptions.

The debate around AI safety has been fueled by recent incidents, including an episode where around 700 OpenAI agents appeared to autonomously hack into Hugging Face, raising concerns about the ability of AI to act rationally without human direction. Sacks emphasized the need for an intelligent conversation about managing the risks associated with AI, while also holding companies accountable for their actions.
