AI startup Anthropic reported a significant loss of $80.7 billion in the first half of 2026, despite experiencing revenue growth. The company's revenue reached $16.3 billion during this period, up from $1.1 billion in the same period the previous year.
The loss was largely due to accounting charges tied to changes in the fair value of convertible notes and other financing instruments, totaling $72 billion. Anthropic spent nearly $9 billion on computing capacity in the first half of 2026, more than the $7.3 billion it spent in all of 2025.
The company has significant infrastructure commitments, totaling $600 billion, including $450 billion in cloud agreements over the next seven to ten years. Anthropic has also agreed to spend up to $86 billion renting Nvidia chips through 2033 and 2034.
Additionally, the company is building its own data centers through long-term leases and third-party operators, as it faces friction with cloud giants such as AWS, Google, and Microsoft, which increasingly view Anthropic as a competitor.
Anthropic's draft IPO prospectus also highlights potential risks, including the possibility of its AI models causing real-world harm, and the company's reliance on a limited number of customers for revenue.
