What happened
A recent analysis by the Blue Cross Blue Shield Association found that the use of artificial intelligence tools in hospitals led to a significant increase in healthcare spending. Over a two-year period, from 2023 to 2025, the use of AI tools resulted in an additional $942 million in medical care costs for Blue Cross and Blue Shield companies.
The study revealed that the increased costs were largely due to a rise in patients being documented as having complex conditions, which led to higher reimbursement rates. However, the research also showed that this increase in diagnoses was not accompanied by a corresponding increase in treatment, suggesting that AI may be identifying more billable conditions rather than sicker patients.
According to the Blue Cross Blue Shield Association, the widespread adoption of AI coding tools is driving higher healthcare spending in the US, which ultimately puts pressure on premiums and out-of-pocket expenses for families, employers, and taxpayers. The association's senior vice president noted that the research raises concerns about the role of AI in exacerbating the affordability crisis in healthcare.
