What happened

An attack on King Fahd International Airport in eastern Saudi Arabia has resulted in one death and eight injuries, with some material damage to the airport. The attack occurred on Wednesday, and the Saudi Civil Aviation Authority announced the casualties and damage early Thursday.

The airport, located in Dammam near Bahrain and Qatar, has been attacked previously amid a wave of Houthi missile and projectile strikes targeting major airports in Saudi Arabia. However, authorities did not provide details on who carried out the latest attack.

Flights have been diverted away from the airport, according to global flight-tracking service Flightradar24. The Saudi Coalition also announced that it intercepted four drone attacks in the eastern region.

The attack comes after a series of deadly attacks in Saudi Arabia by Yemen's Iran-backed Houthi rebels, prompting the US to order some diplomats and the families of US government employees to leave the country due to rising fears of an escalation in hostilities.

Recent attacks in Saudi Arabia have targeted oil facilities, including an Aramco-operated oil field where debris from an intercepted drone killed two people and injured two others. The Houthi rebels have not commented on the latest attack on King Fahd International Airport.
