What happened
A Flydubai flight from Dubai to Tel Aviv was the scene of a violent incident in which the co-pilot allegedly stabbed the captain and attempted to crash the plane. The aircraft, which was carrying over 170 passengers, mostly Israelis, plummeted nearly 14,000 feet before passengers and crew intervened, and two relief pilots took control, landing the plane safely in Tabuk, Saudi Arabia.
According to Israeli officials, the co-pilot's actions were a deliberate attempt to bring down the plane, which could have resulted in a catastrophic loss of life. However, investigators have not yet established a motive for the attack, and Flydubai has cautioned against drawing premature conclusions.
The incident has raised concerns about the normalization of antisemitic hostility and the potential for self-guided, lone-actor terrorism. The attack on the Flydubai flight is seen as a symbol of the threat to coexistence between Israel and the Arab world, as represented by the Abraham Accords.
Experts point to a troubling trend of increased physical violence against Jews and Israelis, despite a decline in overall antisemitic incidents. The Anti-Defamation League recorded 6,274 antisemitic incidents in the US in 2025, with a record 203 physical assaults and 39% increase in attacks involving deadly weapons.
The incident highlights the need for counterterrorism efforts to focus on the ideological environment that can radicalize individuals, rather than just targeting networks and organizations. As one expert notes, lone actors can absorb narratives and justifications for violence without needing direct instructions or affiliation with a terrorist group.
