Australia Commits $7 Million to Pacific Renewable Energy Initiative
The Epoch Times

Australia has committed $7 million to a Pacific renewable energy initiative, announced by Energy Minister Chris Bowen at the pre-COP31 in Fiji, to help Vanuatu expand its renewable energy resources.

What happened

Australia has pledged $7 million to help Vanuatu accelerate its transition to renewable energy. The funding commitment was announced by Energy Minister Chris Bowen at the Pacific Pre-COP31 Summit in Fiji. The program aims to support Vanuatu in expanding its renewable energy resources, including grid modelling and training for early career engineers.

The deal is part of a memorandum of understanding between Australia and Vanuatu, which also focuses on boosting the nation's renewable energy workforce and development. According to Bowen, the funding will help Vanuatu reduce its reliance on fossil fuels, which currently account for a significant portion of its energy consumption.

The announcement comes as Australia faces criticism over its climate record, particularly with regards to its fossil fuel exports. Other nations have questioned Australia's commitment to reducing emissions, citing its ongoing expansion of coal mining and exports. The funding commitment is seen as a practical step towards supporting the Pacific region's transition to renewable energy.

The Pacific Pre-COP31 Summit is a four-day climate conference attended by ministers and participants from over 50 nations. The event precedes the United Nations' Conference of the Parties meeting in Turkey in November. Australia's funding commitment is expected to help Vanuatu achieve its goal of electrifying all government buildings, including schools and hospitals, by 2030.
