What happened
An avalanche on Mount Himlung in northern Nepal has resulted in the deaths of at least four people, with 12 others still missing. The avalanche occurred on Sunday during severe weather, as people at the base camp were preparing for the arrival of foreign clients for the autumn climbing season.
A search and rescue operation is underway, with 10 people already rescued from the mountain and taken to safety by helicopter. The remains of the four people found dead have been airlifted to Kathmandu airport and transported to the Tribhuvan University Teaching Hospital.
The avalanche is believed to have been triggered by heavy rainfall in the Manang district, which also caused flooding and landslides over the weekend. The government had issued warnings of severe weather across the Himalayan nation.
The incident is the latest in a series of natural disasters to affect Nepal, which is still recovering from devastating flooding in August that left over 1,400 people dead and nearly 6,000 others missing.
