The British Columbia New Democratic Party (BC NDP) has announced plans to double the province's critical mineral exports within the next five years. This move is part of the party's efforts to expand the Port of Prince Rupert and create new job opportunities. BC NDP Leader David Eby stated that the province has the critical minerals the world needs, with 18 new and expanded mines on the way.
Meanwhile, the BC Conservatives have proposed a new energy plan, termed the 'BC Energy Superpower Plan', which aims to more than double the province's natural gas production by 2032 and more than triple it by 2035. The plan also calls for easing or cutting regulatory and emissions regulations impacting the development of liquefied natural gas (LNG) in BC.
The two parties have clashed over taxes, with the BC Conservatives promising not to impose new taxes or raise existing ones, while the BC NDP has proposed new taxes, including a speculation tax and an unsold condo tax. The BC NDP has criticized the BC Conservatives' plan, stating that it would require spending cuts, which could impact healthcare and education.
