Bill Gates has announced a commitment of at least $1 billion over the next two years to widen access to artificial intelligence (AI). The funds will be used to develop AI tools for education, healthcare, and agriculture, as well as to incorporate non-English language sources into large datasets that power AI systems.
Gates warned that without intervention, AI could deepen global inequality rather than ease it. He emphasized the urgent need for action, stating that the decisions made in the next 12 to 18 months will determine whether AI benefits the wealthy or those who have the least.
The Gates Foundation's pledge aims to make AI a great equalizer between rich and poor. Gates expressed concerns about the risks AI poses to humanity, including safety threats, job losses, and risks to children.
