The British Consulate sign in East Jerusalem was removed after Israel announced it would shut the consulate in retaliation for UK sanctions on Israeli settlements in the occupied West Bank.

What happened

The British consulate in East Jerusalem has had its sign removed, following Israel's decision to close the consulate in retaliation for UK sanctions on Israeli settlements in the occupied West Bank.

Israel had announced in September that it would shut the consulate within 30 days of the UK sanctions announcement, prompting last-ditch efforts from the UK government to persuade Israel not to close the building.

Although most diplomats will leave the consulate, the UK insists that the building will not be closing and will instead operate as a 'UK Mission'. The UK Foreign Secretary, Ed Miliband, reportedly sees this as a positive outcome.

The consulate is separate from the UK embassy in Tel Aviv, which remains the UK's main diplomatic hub with Israel.
