What happened

A new police recruit has been sworn in to the NYPD, vowing to carry on the legacy of his brother-in-law, a detective who was killed in the line of duty. Sabbir Ahmed, 27, was one of 755 recruits to join the force, nearly 14 months after his brother-in-law, Didarul Islam, was fatally shot by a gunman on Park Avenue.

Islam, 36, was working a security detail when he was killed, along with three others, by a crazed gunman. Ahmed had dreamed of becoming a police officer since he was a child and was encouraged by Islam, who had warned him about the dangers of the job.

Despite the tragedy, Ahmed's parents are supportive of his decision to follow in Islam's footsteps. Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch honored Islam's memory during the swearing-in ceremony, saying he was killed while protecting New Yorkers.

Ahmed has stated that he wants to be a great police officer and serve the community, helping those in need. He was sworn in alongside the other recruits at the Police Academy in Queens.
