A recent incident at a California high school has sparked outrage after four female students posted a photo of themselves in blackface on social media.
What happened
The students, who attend San Marcos High School in Santa Barbara, posted a meme on TikTok that showed them posing in blackface, mimicking an AI-generated image of four young black boys. The post included a caption with a ninja emoji, which is sometimes used as a reference to a racial slur.
The school's administration was notified about the incident through its reporting system, and the students faced consequences for their actions. The school's principal, Dare Holdren, informed parents that the students had portrayed blackface and that the school had taken action.
The incident has been widely condemned, including by the school district's superintendent, Hilda Maldonado, who stated that blackface has a long history of dehumanizing and humiliating Black people. Maldonado emphasized the need for the school district to continue working towards creating an inclusive school culture.
This incident is not the first racist incident to occur in the school district. Last year, a substitute teacher was removed from campus after reading a racial slur out loud during a class reading. Community members have expressed concerns about the prevalence of racial issues on campus, with some students stating that they do not feel safe.
