Stelco Holdings Inc. has announced the indefinite idling of finishing operations at its steel plant in Hamilton, Ontario, citing market uncertainty. The decision is expected to affect up to 500 employees. The company will concentrate production at its Lake Erie Works plant in Nanticoke, Ontario, and has offered jobs at this plant to a significant number of affected Hamilton employees.
The idling of the Hamilton plant's cold-rolled and coated operations is set to begin on October 9. Stelco attributes the decision to continued market uncertainty, largely resulting from steel imports into Canada and U.S. tariffs. The company claims this move will ensure its survival amidst declining demand for its products.
According to Ron Wells, president of United Steelworkers Local 1005, approximately 350 production employees are expected to lose their jobs. The federal government has expressed sympathy for the affected workers and their families, stating that it had attempted to work with the company to find ways to continue operations but was rejected.
The announcement comes as the U.S. continues to impose tariffs on Canadian steel products, ranging up to 50 percent. This move has been criticized by Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre, who views the layoffs as a devastating blow to Canadian workers and the steel industry.
