What happened
CBS News London bureau staffers were reprimanded over edits to a Gaza war segment. The segment's reporter, Holly Williams, had included the Palestinian death toll, but it was cut from the final version.
The branch's top editor, Shayndi Raice, handed out the reprimand, stating that the company has a hierarchy in place and that insubordination is grounds for firing. Raice also announced that the desk's workflow would be changing.
Williams had included the number of casualties recorded since October 7, 2023, in her original script, but it was removed from the final cut. She expressed her concerns about the edits, stating that she was told to make the changes without negotiation.
Raice defended her decision, saying that the inclusion of the death toll was not necessary and that the story should be framed differently. She also stated that she had discussed the issue with Williams and that they would continue the conversation privately.
The incident has sparked controversy, with some sources suggesting that CBS News chief Bari Weiss, an ardent Israel supporter, was involved in the editing process. However, a CBS spokesperson denied these claims, stating that the editorial process is rigorous and that all pieces go through edits from editors.
