A new bridge connecting China and North Korea has been opened, marking a significant development in the strengthening of ties between the two countries.
What happened
Chinese state media announced the opening of the New Yalu River Bridge, which connects Dandong, China, and Sinuiju, North Korea. The bridge was completed in 2014 but its opening was delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic and diplomatic strain between the two countries.
Chinese Premier Li Qiang celebrated the bridge opening, describing it as a symbol of the traditional friendship between China and North Korea. He also expressed China's willingness to expand political mutual trust and practical cooperation with North Korea.
The bridge is expected to enhance economic ties and people-to-people exchanges between the two countries. However, the opening of the bridge has not been widely reported in North Korean state media, which often delays updating the population on critical news stories.
