Colombia Establishes Diplomatic Presence in Jerusalem with New Embassy
The Epoch Times

Colombia has opened its embassy in Jerusalem, deepening diplomatic relations with Israel after restoring bilateral ties in August, with Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Sa'ar and Colombian Foreign Minister Omar Bula inaugurating the embassy.

Colombia has inaugurated its embassy in Jerusalem, deepening its diplomatic ties with Israel. The move follows the restoration of diplomatic and economic relations between the two countries in August.

What happened

Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Sa'ar and Colombian Foreign Minister Omar Bula officially opened the embassy on October 14. This event marks the 10th embassy to be established in Jerusalem. The embassy opening is part of a broader shift in Colombia's foreign policy under President Abelardo de la Espriella, who has sought to rebuild relations with Israel since taking office in August.

Prior to this, Colombia had severed diplomatic ties with Israel in May 2024 due to its actions in Gaza. However, under de la Espriella's administration, Colombia has moved to restore these ties, including recognizing Israeli sovereignty over the Golan Heights in August and breaking diplomatic relations with Iran in September.

The Colombian Embassy in Jerusalem will be led by Ambassador Tania Gilinski and will expand consular services for Colombians in Israel. The embassy opening is also expected to enhance bilateral cooperation between Colombia and Israel in areas such as security, trade, investment, and technology.
