Colombia has reopened its embassy in Jerusalem, Israel, marking a significant shift in the country's foreign policy under conservative President Abelardo de la Espriella.
What happened
The embassy's opening ceremony took place on Wednesday, with Colombian Foreign Minister Omar Bula and Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar in attendance. This move restores Colombia's diplomatic ties with Israel, which were cut by former President Gustavo Petro in 2024.
According to the Colombian Foreign Ministry, the embassy will focus on fostering cooperation in areas such as security, trade, investment, agriculture, science, and technology. It will also provide support to Colombian nationals living in Israel.
This development is part of a broader realignment of Colombia's foreign policy and diplomatic presence under President de la Espriella. The country has now become the tenth nation to open its embassy in Jerusalem.
