What happened
The Ebola outbreak in Congo has resulted in over 4,000 deaths, with 4,018 reported fatalities among 8,300 confirmed cases. This outbreak is considered the fastest-growing on record. More than 2,000 patients have recovered from the disease. The outbreak, caused by the rare Bundibugyo virus, was announced on May 15 and has no known treatment or vaccine.
Health workers in the affected area have protested over unpaid wages, with some going on strike to demand payment. This has further hindered efforts to contain the disease. An aid worker with Médecins Sans Frontières was infected with Ebola and has been flown to the Netherlands for treatment.
The World Health Organization has raised concerns about the rapid spread of the virus into new health zones, straining limited resources. Over 50 health workers have died after contracting the virus. Tensions are high, with a local politician being attacked and killed for supporting government measures to deal with the outbreak.
Efforts to slow the outbreak are being hampered by widespread mistrust of health workers and authorities. A village-centered approach was launched last month, but some residents believe Ebola is a hoax, and there is deep distrust in the government due to past outbreaks and corruption.
