What happened

The Ebola outbreak in Congo has resulted in over 4,000 confirmed deaths, according to government data. The outbreak, caused by the rare Bundibugyo ebolavirus, has affected 8,300 people, with 4,018 fatalities and more than 2,000 recoveries. Doctors Without Borders described the outbreak as spreading like wildfire in North Kivu province.

The current outbreak is the deadliest in Congo's history, surpassing the 2018-2020 epidemic. It is active in seven provinces, including North Kivu, South Kivu, and Ituri. The World Health Organization reported signs of decreased transmission in Ituri Province, but the outbreak continues to spread quickly in eastern Congo.

A targeted Ebola vaccination program was launched in August for healthcare staff and frontline workers. However, there is no approved treatment for the Bundibugyo strain, and clinical trials are underway to develop a vaccine. Doctors Without Borders expressed concerns about the difficulty in containing the outbreak due to new cases emerging and the virus spreading in northern North Kivu.

Conflict, poor infrastructure, and limited access to basic services are hindering outbreak control efforts. The United Nations noted that efforts to contain the outbreak are being affected by conflict involving multiple armed groups and poor roads and damaged infrastructure.
