What happened
The Cuban mission to the United Nations in New York City held an event to celebrate the anniversary of the Committees for the Defense of the Revolution (CDRs), a neighborhood spy program used to monitor and control Cubans.
Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodríguez attended the event and expressed his commitment to defending the Cuban Revolution and socialism. The event was also used to condemn the United States for its opposition to Cuba's human rights abuses and repression of its people.
The CDRs are a network of local spies who report on their neighbors' activities to the Communist Party. The program has been criticized for its role in suppressing dissent and opposition to the Cuban government.
The event was part of the Cuban regime's efforts to promote its ideology and criticize the United States during the United Nations General Assembly. Cuban officials have previously used the occasion of the General Assembly to attend events with sympathetic leftists in New York City and to promote the Cuban dictatorship.
