A deadly attack occurred at a Greek Orthodox church in the village of Hammoud in Karak governorate, Jordan, during a funeral procession.
What happened
Gunmen stormed the church compound and opened fire, killing at least 7 people and wounding 34 others, according to the interior minister. The attackers, described as extremists, got out of a vehicle and fired continuously for about 5 minutes before fleeing the scene.
The king of Jordan, Abdullah II, condemned the attack and vowed to strike back with an iron fist against those who threaten the nation. An eyewitness reported that between 150 and 200 people were in and around the church at the time of the attack, with most of the victims aged between 50 and 70.
The Lebanese president, Joseph Aoun, also denounced the attack as a heinous terrorist act that aims to strike at coexistence and spread strife. A manhunt is currently underway for the perpetrators.
