Denmark has demonstrated its dedication to the NATO alliance by purchasing advanced missiles from US defense firms, highlighting its strategic importance to the US and NATO.
What happened
Denmark will acquire the air-launched Joint Strike Missile, capable of hitting targets at ranges of up to 190 nautical miles, and the Anthem ground-launched cruise missile, with a range of over 900 miles. These purchases are funded by Denmark's significant defense budget, which is 3.4% of its GDP.
The country's commitment to defense spending is notable, as it is set to meet President Trump's target of 3.5% of GDP on defense in the near future. This is in contrast to other top US allies, such as the UK and France, which have been criticized for their lower defense spending.
Denmark's actions are seen as a signal of its strategic intent to fight hard for NATO, and its willingness to put its resources and military forces into common cause with the US and other allies. The country's past experiences, including the loss of equivalent to 2,152 soldiers in Afghanistan and Iraq, have not deterred its commitment to the alliance.
