Eritrea has severed diplomatic ties with Ethiopia, following Ethiopia's closure of the Eritrean embassy in Addis Ababa and the expulsion of 10 Eritrean diplomats, amid an escalating conflict in northern Ethiopia.

Eritrea has severed diplomatic ties with Ethiopia, following Ethiopia's closure of the Eritrean embassy in Addis Ababa and the expulsion of 10 Eritrean diplomats.

What happened

The move comes after Ethiopia accused Eritrea, along with Sudan and Egypt, of supporting the Tigray People's Liberation Front (TPLF), a rebel group fighting against the Ethiopian government. Eritrea, Sudan, and Egypt have denied the allegations.

Explosions were reported in Addis Ababa, possibly due to drone attacks, raising concerns of an escalation in the conflict in northern Ethiopia. The Israeli Foreign Ministry has warned against traveling to certain areas in Ethiopia, including Tigray, Amhara, Afar, and the Danakil Desert.

The conflict between the Ethiopian government and the TPLF has been ongoing since 2020, resulting in the deaths of hundreds of thousands of people and the displacement of over a million. A peace agreement was signed in 2022, but tensions have continued to rise, with fighting breaking out again in recent months.
