A comment by the Royal Navy's head has sparked debate in Estonia over the UK's ability to deliver on regional defense through its nuclear umbrella.

What happened

A comment by the head of the Royal Navy about the UK's nuclear umbrella for Joint Expeditionary Force partners has sparked debate in Estonia over the UK's ability to deliver on regional defense. The Joint Expeditionary Force is a UK-led defense cooperation framework that aims to strengthen deterrence in the Baltic Sea region.

According to security experts, the UK's nuclear umbrella does not provide a separate guarantee for Estonia, and conventional capability is more important for the region's defense. The UK is the sole nuclear power in the 10-member state Joint Expeditionary Force.

Experts have raised concerns about the UK's ability to fulfill its role as regional military leader due to a lack of resources. The UK has been constantly plagued by a lack of resources on military matters, which has impacted deployments to Estonia. Despite this, former defense minister Hanno Pevkur believes that the UK's capabilities should not be underestimated.

There are currently 900 British troops in Estonia, and a new contingent arriving next year will be about 300 personnel larger than the current one. Estonia is also in talks with France to join its enhanced nuclear deterrence initiative.
