Estonia is taking steps to support Ukraine's transportation network, which has been severely impacted by the ongoing conflict with Russia.
What happened
Minister of Foreign Affairs Margus Tsahkna announced that Estonia intends to send a significant number of locomotives to Ukraine to help replace those destroyed by Russia. This decision was made after a phone call with Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha, where they discussed the current situation in Ukraine and the need for assistance.
According to Tsahkna, Russia's attacks have already destroyed or damaged 340 railway carriages this year, highlighting the need for practical assistance. The Estonian Ministry of Foreign Affairs has identified over 60 locomotives that could potentially be sent to Ukraine, and a Ukrainian Railways expert group has visited Estonia to assess their suitability.
In addition to the locomotives, Estonia will also provide Ukraine with an additional €10 million through NATO's PURL initiative, bringing the country's total contribution to €30 million. Tsahkna emphasized that Ukraine must receive more extensive practical assistance in the coming months to help the country cope with the ongoing conflict.
