Lauri Läänemets, chair of the Social Democratic Party, has emphasized the need for Estonia to play a more active role in shaping European foreign policy. According to Läänemets, Estonia's security and prosperity depend on its ability to influence decisions made by major powers.
What happened
A recent meeting in Miami, attended by senior Ukrainian security officials, national security advisers from France, Germany, and the United Kingdom, and representatives of the European Commission and NATO, discussed how to end the war in Ukraine and the security architecture of Europe. Meanwhile, President Donald Trump held a phone call with Vladimir Putin, resulting in the decision to allow Russia to resume selling large quantities of diesel fuel on the global market and ease sanctions on Russian fuel.
Läänemets argues that Estonia must do more to influence decisions shaping Europe's security and Ukraine's future, rather than risking having its own future decided by others. He believes that Estonia's prime minister must be capable of shaping international opinion and influencing major powers, such as Washington, Paris, or Berlin.
Läänemets criticizes the current government, led by Prime Minister Kristen Michal, for lacking ambition and not taking a leadership role in major European security policy discussions. He contrasts this with the previous government, led by Kaja Kallas, which built personal relationships with European leaders and actively participated in discussions that shaped Europe's policy toward Ukraine.
Läänemets emphasizes that Estonia's future depends on its ability to secure a place in discussions where important decisions are made and to make its voice heard. He believes that Estonia must work more closely with other small and medium-sized countries to forge new alliances and identify common interests, and that it needs representatives with the necessary preparation, knowledge, skills, and international networks to shape Europe's future.
