Estonia's counterintelligence service has warned of a new and dangerous phase of sabotage operations in Europe, orchestrated by Russian special services.
What happened
According to Estonian Foreign Minister Margus Tsahkna, the targets of these operations are no longer purely symbolic, but rather defense industry companies. Tsahkna cited a recent attack on an Estonian defense industry company, which was attributed to Russian secret services. He also noted that there has been an increase in the number of such attacks, not only in the Baltic States but also across Europe.
Tsahkna distinguished between this hybrid war and Russia's actual military capabilities, which he believes have been degraded by its involvement in Ukraine. He emphasized the importance of European unity in the face of these threats, stating that Russia is testing the unity of European countries and seeking to divide them.
Tsahkna also discussed diplomatic efforts to reach a ceasefire in Ukraine, warning that Europe should not become a neutral arbiter in the conflict. He emphasized the need for Europe to maintain its sanctions against Russia and not to be drawn into a mediating position that could undermine its unity.
