Europe Faces Defense Challenges as US Reduces Military Presence

The US is reducing its military presence in Europe, posing a challenge to the continent's defense as Russia intensifies its threats and war against Ukraine.

What happened

The United States is reducing its military presence in Europe, which poses a challenge to the continent's defense as Russia intensifies its threats and war against Ukraine.

According to NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, Europe's reliance on the US for protection is alarming, with 500 million Europeans depending on 300 million Americans for defense against 140 million Russians.

The US plan to delegate more responsibility to European countries is not new, but the current administration has begun to implement cuts, which is happening at a time when Russia is waging a full-scale war in Europe.

Security experts have warned that the US plan poses risks, as Europe will not be able to replace the military capabilities that the Americans want to cut, and that such a policy threatens America itself.

One possible solution is the formation of coalitions of the willing, such as the Joint Expeditionary Force (JEF), led by the United Kingdom, which can act immediately without waiting for NATO's Article 5 to be formally invoked.

Russia has recently begun threatening the use of nuclear weapons again, and has warned Europe that it could resort to nuclear weapons if European countries take action against Kaliningrad.
