What happened
Nidal Malik Hasan, the perpetrator of the 2009 Fort Hood massacre, has been scheduled to be executed by firing squad on December 3 at Fort Hood, Texas. This will be the first US military execution since 1961. Hasan was convicted of killing 13 people and wounding 32 others in the attack.
President Donald Trump approved the execution method, which was recommended by Secretary of War Pete Hegseth. Hasan, a former Army psychiatrist, was convicted by a military jury in 2013. Witnesses reported that he shouted a religious phrase before opening fire, and he later stated that he was acting in defense of Muslims and to deter US military operations in Afghanistan.
The execution date follows a pledge by Hegseth to carry out Hasan's death sentence. There are also three other men on the military's death row at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas. The Trump administration has taken steps to strengthen enforcement of the federal death penalty, including reinstating the use of firing squads and lethal injection for federal executions.
