A devastating fire broke out at a Canadian military base in Alberta, resulting in the deaths of four service members and injuring dozens more. The blaze occurred during a live-fire training exercise at Canadian Forces Base Wainwright.
What happened
High winds fueled the fast-moving fire, which suddenly shifted direction and swept toward the troops training in the area. Despite being aware of the fire for hours, military officials believed it was contained enough for training to continue. However, the fire moved rapidly, covering a kilometer in just 36 seconds.
Thirty-nine people were hospitalized, including 19 in critical condition, eight in stable condition, and 12 being treated for less serious injuries. The injured were taken to hospitals in Wainwright, Edmonton, Red Deer, and Calgary, with air ambulances assisting in the transportation of patients.
The fire was eventually brought under control, but not before it crossed the base perimeter into the surrounding area. Fortunately, no evacuation orders were issued, and local authorities reported that the blaze was not expected to spread beyond its existing boundaries.
The incident has been described as one of the worst peacetime tragedies to strike Canada's armed forces on home soil. An investigation into the cause of the fire is ongoing, and flags will fly at half-staff on federal buildings nationwide in honor of those killed and injured.
