A devastating fire broke out at a Canadian military base in Alberta, resulting in the deaths of four service members and injuring 39 others, including 19 critically.
What happened
The incident occurred during a live-fire combat training exercise at Canadian Forces Base Wainwright, where a fast-moving wildfire overtook soldiers. Despite knowing about the grass fire for hours, military officials believed it was contained and allowed training to continue. However, winds suddenly shifted, sending flames racing toward the soldiers.
Major General Wade Rutland stated that the fire moved unusually fast, covering a kilometer in just 36 seconds. A commander at the scene reported that soldiers went from seeing no fire to being surrounded by flames in less than a minute.
The injured were transferred to four hospitals across Alberta, with some suffering severe burns and potentially facing weeks or months of intensive treatment. A doctor at a hospital in Edmonton described the situation as a disaster, with the number of patients overwhelming local healthcare facilities.
The four deceased service members have been identified, and an investigation into the cause of the initial grass fire is ongoing. The Royal Canadian Mounted Police are involved in the investigation, which is described as very active and delicate.
