A recent fire at a Canadian military base has claimed the lives of four military members and injured dozens. This incident is not an isolated event, as there have been several fatalities at Canadian military facilities over the years.
What happened
Past incidents at Canadian military bases include a soldier being shot during live-fire training at CFB Wainwright in October 2020, resulting in their death. In April 2017, Sgt. Robert J. Dynerowicz was killed in a vehicle accident during Exercise Rugged Bear at the same base. Other incidents have occurred, including the collapse of a lookout tower during infantry training in November 2014, and the death of Lt.-Col. Dan Bobbitt in May 2014 when a light armoured vehicle rolled over during a training mission.
Additional incidents have been reported, such as the collision of two military trucks during a training exercise near CFB Shilo in Manitoba in March 2014, and the death of Cpl. Jean-Michel Deziel in January 2011 after falling from a roof while installing a telecommunications antenna at CFB Valcartier in Quebec.
