The Finnish government has announced a plan to donate 10 diesel locomotives to Ukraine. The locomotives, which are currently operational but soon to be decommissioned, will be transferred to the state and then donated to Ukraine.
What happened
The Government of Ukraine requested the donation to replace locomotives lost during Russia's war of aggression. Russia has targeted Ukraine's railway infrastructure, resulting in the destruction or damage of hundreds of locomotives. The donated locomotives will help support Ukraine's security of supply, economy, and people's mobility.
The donation will not impact the Finnish railway company VR's ability to operate its services. VR will continue to auction off decommissioned rolling stock on the Finnish market despite the donation.
