A working group in Finland has proposed the adoption of government-to-government (G2G) contracting to enhance the country's defense industry exports.
What happened
The Finnish Government has identified the defense industry as a key area for future growth and wellbeing. According to Minister of Defence Häkkänen, the international defense market has already contributed to strong growth for Finnish companies.
G2G contracting involves one government selling defense materiel directly to another government, either from its own inventory or by procuring from private suppliers. This practice has gained popularity internationally, particularly in the defense sector, and is used even between EU Member States.
The working group believes that G2G contracting could increase the competitiveness of Finland's defense and security industry, retain essential expertise and production capacity, and deepen defense and security cooperation with partners.
