Finnish President Alexander Stubb has credited President Donald Trump with pushing for peace talks between Russia and Ukraine. Stubb made the comments in an interview, stating that Trump has been working hard to find a solution to the conflict. The Finnish president also expressed confidence in his country's preparedness for any potential threat from Russia, citing Finland's military capabilities and NATO membership.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, however, warned that Russia could take its war beyond Ukraine, targeting other European countries. Zelenskyy argued that Russian President Vladimir Putin may seek to create instability elsewhere in Europe to pressure Western governments into reducing their support for Kyiv.
Stubb downplayed the likelihood of a Russian attack on Finland, saying that his country is calm because it is prepared. He pointed to Finland's mandatory military service, reserve force, and extensive network of civilian shelters as deterrents against a potential Russian threat.
The comments came during an intense diplomatic week in New York, where world leaders gathered for the U.N. General Assembly. Trump and Zelenskyy met in New York, and Trump called for countries to support efforts to prevent Iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon.
