Florida Jail Ministry Sees Surge in Baptisms and Transformations
CBN News

A Florida jail ministry has seen a surge in baptisms and transformations, with 70 inmates baptized in July and 45 in August, as a result of a coordinated effort between the Walton County Sheriff's Office and local churches.

What happened

A Florida jail ministry has seen a significant increase in baptisms and a transformation in the lives of inmates. Rev. Jonathan King, a volunteer chaplain at the Walton County Jail, attributes this to the ministry's approach of treating inmates as people rather than just prisoners. The ministry, a collaboration between the Walton County Sheriff's Office, First Apostolic Church, and New Life Church, offers worship, prayer, and Bible study.

The impact of the ministry extends beyond the weekly meetings, with inmates teaching Bible studies and holding prayer meetings in their pods. In July, 70 inmates were baptized, and in August, another 45 inmates were baptized at the Okaloosa County Jail. The ministry focuses on rehabilitating and discipling inmates, aiming to help them change their lives and find purpose.

According to King, the transformation is evident, with one former inmate now attending his church and bringing others with him. The jail has also seen a decrease in disciplinary actions among the baptized inmates, with zero incidents reported in recent weeks. The ministry is now expanding to help men prepare for life after incarceration, teaching a recovery program to connect with those about to be released.
