What happened
A FlyDubai flight experienced a violent midair attack when the copilot, identified as 29-year-old Omani national Hamam al-Hammami, allegedly stabbed the pilot, Capt. Smit Machchhar. The aircraft plummeted over 14,000 feet in 30 seconds, but despite sustaining serious injuries, Machchhar was able to open the cockpit door, allowing passengers to subdue al-Hammami.
A second FlyDubai crew on board stabilized the plane and completed an emergency landing in Saudi Arabia. The incident has raised concerns about pilot screening and the potential for geopolitical risks to impact airline safety.
Response and Aftermath
Eliran Almog, a former Israeli pilot and aviation cybersecurity CEO, praised the heroism of Capt. Machchhar and the resilience of the flight's passengers. Almog emphasized the importance of thorough screening processes for pilots, including psychological and potential political risks, and called for governments and regulators to step in.
Almog also highlighted the need for airlines to screen not just pilots, but also cabin crew and maintenance personnel, as they can all impact flight operations. He noted that over 80% of cybersecurity threats come from insiders, and that aviation relies on a complex supply chain.
