Former Adviser Discusses Failed Israel-Saudi Arabia Deal
CBS News

Brett McGurk discusses the events surrounding a potential deal to normalize relations between Israel and Saudi Arabia, which was put on hold after an attack in Israel on October 7, 2023.

Brett McGurk, a former top Middle East adviser to President Joe Biden, recently discussed the events surrounding a potential deal to normalize relations between Israel and Saudi Arabia. McGurk stated that a deal was in the works, with a package of agreements including a pathway for Palestinian statehood, but it was put on hold after an attack in Israel on October 7, 2023.

What happened

McGurk explained that he had a meeting with Saudi Princess Reema Bandar on October 6, 2023, where they shook hands on a deal to normalize relations between Israel and Saudi Arabia. However, just hours later, an attack occurred in Israel, which McGurk believes was a tragic event that knocked the deal off the agenda. McGurk noted that Hamas, which does not recognize Israel, may have had motivations to disrupt the potential deal.

McGurk also discussed the role of Qatar in mediating between the US and Hamas, stating that Qatar plays a critical role in dealing with the terrorist group. He revealed that the Emir of Qatar told him that Hamas was a burden to them and that they would shed them if the US asked. McGurk emphasized the importance of Qatar in facilitating communication with Hamas, particularly in hostage negotiations.

McGurk expressed his belief that there should be accountability for the events surrounding the attack, including an investigation into what was missed and what could have been done differently. He also highlighted the need for Israel to have a clear investigation into the events leading up to the attack.
