What happened
John Arnold, a billionaire philanthropist and former Enron natural gas trader, has been quietly assembling a network of patronage across red-state America, promoting green energy and hostility to fossil fuels. According to a report by Power the Future, Arnold's money has fueled research into probation leniency and backed nominally conservative energy groups that prioritize green energy.
Arnold's organization, Arnold Ventures, has given out over $190 million in grants in 2024, with a significant portion going to environmental and clean-energy groups, including the Environmental Defense Fund and the Climate Leadership Council. The report also found that Arnold's money is being funneled through aligned organizations, such as the Energy Foundation and the Conservative Energy Network, to influence energy policy in states like Ohio, Oklahoma, and Indiana.
In Oklahoma, Arnold Ventures has partnered with Governor Kevin Stitt to provide funding for programs, including tutoring, youth services, and adoption. The partnership has raised concerns among some Republicans, who argue that Arnold's priorities are at odds with their ideological worldview.
The report's author, Dan Turner, argues that conservative officials and officeholders should be aware of the sources of funding for research and advocacy, and that Arnold's financial web runs counter to their policy agenda. Turner has called for reform, including the passage of the Stop Climate Shakedowns Act of 2026, which would ban climate lawfare against oil, gas, and coal companies.
