Peter Doocy, a White House correspondent for Fox News, has expressed skepticism about President Trump's recent denial of a report suggesting the Pentagon is planning a strike on Iran.
What happened
Doocy appeared on Sean Hannity's show, where he discussed the president's denial of the report, which was published in The Atlantic. The report cited two unnamed administration officials and suggested that the Pentagon was considering a strike on Iran to score political points ahead of the midterms.
Doocy pointed out that President Trump has been inconsistent in his statements about the midterms, having previously claimed that he did not care about the elections. However, the correspondent noted that the president has been actively campaigning for Republican candidates, including a gubernatorial candidate in New York.
Doocy speculated that the president's denial of the report may be a 'head fake' intended to deceive the Iranians or to acknowledge the political problems caused by the conflict. The correspondent also noted that the conflict has driven up costs for Americans due to the closure of the Strait of Hormuz, a major oil shipping route.
President Trump had earlier posted on Truth Social, stating that the US would not attack Iran before the midterm elections and that Iran would not be allowed to develop a nuclear weapon. However, Doocy's comments suggest that the president's statement may not be entirely credible.
