What happened
Violent unrest has erupted in France as student protests over school conditions have spiraled out of control. The protests, which began in disadvantaged suburbs of Paris, have entered their third week and have seen widespread vandalism, blockades, and fires at dozens of schools across the country.
Experts point to an alliance between far-left and radical Islamic groups as a key factor in fueling the violence. Pro-Palestinian organizations have declared October a month of revolt and are supporting the demonstrations, with protestors carrying Palestinian flags and expressing hatred towards the French system.
The French government has responded by ordering schools to replace normal lessons with structured dialogue and staff crisis management meetings in an effort to calm tensions. Over 6,100 people have been arrested since the protests began, and 715 police officers have been injured.
The protests have been characterized as a broader confrontation with the government, with some experts suggesting that the far-left and Islamists are combining forces to undermine France itself. The economic troubles facing France have also been cited as a contributing factor to the unrest.
