What happened
Nationwide protests in France have entered their third week, with thousands of students, parents, and teachers demonstrating against poor school conditions. The protests have resulted in the closure of hundreds of high schools, with all universities also being mobilized. Demonstrators are demanding that the government address the underfunding and lack of resources in schools, which many claim are in a state of disrepair.
Protesters have reported incidents of ceilings falling apart, water damage, and rodent infestations in schools. Clashes between protesters and law enforcement have led to damage, fires, and detentions. Over 5,000 people, including more than 4,000 teenagers, have been detained in connection with the protests. Police have used tear gas and stun grenades to disperse the crowds, resulting in injuries, including a 15-year-old student who lost a hand after picking up a police grenade.
The French government has yet to offer any significant concessions to the protesters, who vow to continue demonstrating until their demands are met. Local officials have announced investigations into incidents involving police use of force, including the injury of a 14-year-old student who suffered a jaw fracture after being struck with a tear gas grenade.
