Trade ministers from the Group of 20 nations have failed to reach an agreement on addressing excess factory capacity and forced labor in supply chains. According to U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer, while the ministers agreed to denounce food trade coercion, they were divided on how to tackle the issues of overcapacity and forced labor.
Greer stated that nearly all countries acknowledge the need for action on excess capacity, but there is a lack of consensus on the best approach. He noted that the current system of trade remedies is inadequate to solve the problem. The United States plans to work with like-minded trading partners to address overcapacity, having already taken unilateral tariff measures to protect American industries.
China, a G20 member, has denied claims that its industrial policies have created excess capacity and has accused Western countries of using the issue to justify protectionist measures. The disagreement highlights the challenges faced by the G20 nations in addressing complex trade issues.
