Goldman Sachs executives are set to receive over $500 million in bonuses, with CEO David Solomon expected to receive more than $100 million. The bonuses are part of a five-year executive compensation program that rewards executives for increasing shareholder returns. The program was launched in 2021 and has resulted in a significant increase in the value of the awards due to the bank's strong stock performance.
The bonuses come as many Americans struggle with debt and dwindling savings. According to the Federal Reserve, 37% of American adults lack enough readily available funds to cover a $400 emergency expense. Additionally, credit card balances have increased, with Americans relying on borrowed money to manage household expenses.
The bonuses have been defended by a Goldman spokesperson, who stated that the incentives are intended to align executive compensation with performance and retain top talent. The final value of the awards will be determined later in October, when the five-year performance period concludes.
