What happened
Google has launched its first AI data center into orbit with the help of SpaceX. The small satellite, called Project Suncatcher, is equipped with data center components, including Google's custom Tensor Processing Units (TPUs). The goal of the project is to test whether AI can survive in the harsh conditions of space.
The satellite was launched on a Falcon 9 rocket on October 1 and is currently collecting data to transmit back to Google. The project aims to determine if Google's TPUs can withstand sustained radiation without hardware failures.
The launch is part of a larger effort by tech companies to explore the possibility of building data centers in space. The benefits of doing so include access to near-infinite power and the ability to avoid taking energy away from local communities.
Google will spend the next several weeks gathering data from Project Suncatcher. If the test is successful, it could pave the way for the development of functioning AI data centers in orbit by the early to mid-2030s.
