What happened
A 16-year-old former student, Griffin John II, opened fire on Silver Rail Elementary School in Bend, Oregon, killing three students and one teacher. The shooter targeted the special needs classroom, where he was once a student.
Kaylub Giamanco, a 36-year-old father of two, intervened and killed the shooter, preventing further loss of life. Giamanco's children attend the school, and he holds a concealed carry license.
According to Giamanco's mother, he 'stalked' the gunman and 'army crawled' through a window that the shooter had shot out before confronting and killing him. The father is struggling to accept that he couldn't save all the children and is traumatized by the experience.
The community has hailed Giamanco as a hero, and a GoFundMe has been set up to support him and his family. The fundraiser has garnered nearly $280,000 to help pay for therapy, legal expenses, and to support Giamanco while he takes time off work following the tragedy.
