Hong Kong health authorities have intensified screening of Russian arrivals after a lab worker died from pneumonia in Siberia, sparking concerns of a potential plague outbreak.
The lab worker, 28-year-old Darya Shipilova, was hospitalized with severe pneumonia on September 29 and died on October 2. Russian authorities have not disclosed the exact cause of death, only stating it was "pneumonia of unknown origin."
In response, Hong Kong's Centre for Health Protection has implemented temperature checks and health assessments at airport gates for passengers arriving from Russia. Passengers exhibiting symptoms will be transferred to public hospitals for further testing.
The World Health Organization (WHO) has requested more information about the laboratory tests conducted and the pathogens evaluated, but Russian authorities have not provided any further details.
Other countries, including Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, and Mongolia, have also stepped up quarantine measures and testing to prevent a potential epidemic from spreading to their territories.
Experts have raised concerns about the lack of transparency from Russian authorities and the possibility of links to biological weapons. The US Intelligence Community's annual assessment report in 2025 identified Russia as one of a few countries with a clandestine biological weapons program.
