What happened
Rep. Thomas Massie has introduced a resolution to impeach Secretary of War Pete Hegseth, citing 'high crimes and misdemeanors' related to the Iran conflict. Massie read eight articles of impeachment on the House floor, accusing Hegseth of violating the War Powers Resolution of 1973.
The articles allege that Hegseth's department is waging war without declaration or statutory authorization, and that he has continued hostilities despite congressional directives to remove troops. Additional charges include refusing to minimize civilian casualties, extrajudicial killing, and the kidnapping of a foreign leader.
The Pentagon has defended Hegseth, stating that the department is unified behind his vision. Republican leaders may attempt to table the measure, but would require near-unanimous support from their party. This move comes after Hegseth campaigned against Massie in a primary election, and follows a similar effort by House Democrats to introduce articles of impeachment against Hegseth in April.
